What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a term used to describe a highlighting technique that produces incredibly realistic results. One of the primary benefits of this particular technique is that the roots are not evident when the color begins to grow out. Although balayage developed back in the 1970s in Paris, only now is it gaining worldwide recognition and becoming a fashion-forward trend. Not all stylists are properly trained in this technique, it is important to find a salon or stylist who understands balayage and who has some experience with the technique if you are interested in this amazing style.
Balayage means “to sweep” in French, and this describes the process behind which the stylist applies color to the hair. Rather than traditional foils that often produce less-than-natural results, stylists sweep the color onto the hair – heavier at the bottom and lighter at the top – to produce sun-kissed highlights that look perfectly natural. It works for blonde, brunette, and red hair alike. This is the perfect look for women who prefer the look of natural highlights and who want less maintenance in the weeks to follow.
Because the color at the base of the hair is much thinner, balayage continues to look natural even as it grows out. However, you still need to do a few things at home to properly maintain the color service. Even though highlights are more difficult to “wash out” than traditional pigments, you should use a color-safe shampoo and conditioner that adds the needed level of moisture to the hair shaft. Next, apply products that help to protect the hair from any heat source, such as a blowdryer or curling iron, particularly at the ends.
