5 Reasons you Might be Losing your Hair
One of the most common health problems that affect men and women these days is that of hair loss. Although there can be a great number of reasons why this condition occurs to people of all ages, below are some of the more common causes.
Stress or Traumatic Events
If you have recently experienced a traumatic event, such as an auto collision, the death of a family member or even a job loss, you will undoubtedly be suffering from excessively high stress levels. Stress can affect the body in many different ways, with hair loss being a common symptom of this. Stress triggers an autoimmune reaction in the body, which causes the hair follicles to go into resting phase, after which it starts falling out. Once your stress levels diminish though, your hair will usually start growing again.
Food Allergies
Wheat, dairy, soy or other food allergies can cause different reactions in different people, with hair loss being a common symptom. This happens as a result of the immune system reacting against the allergens in an effort to eliminate them from the body as quickly as possible. In rare cases, your immune system will detect the growth if your hair as an attack, which will cause it to destroy its own hair follicles. The good news here though, is that this type of hair loss normally reverses once you stop consuming the foods that you are allergic to.
Surgery
If you have had any surgery that has required the use of anesthesia within the past three to six months, chances are that this could be the cause of your hair loss. This combination puts the body under a tremendous amount of stress, which has a negative effect on the hair follicles themselves. Thankfully though, hair loss that is caused by this is reversible as well – it may take a few months for your hair to recover fully though.
Brushing while it’s wet
Your hair is far more fragile when it is wet than when it is dry, which means that it will be more susceptible to breaking and falling out if you brush it when it’s wet. Another culprit for hair loss and breakage is rough towel drying while it is wet. Instead of rubbing it vigorously after washing it or showering, wrap your hair gently in a microfiber towel and gently pat it until it is dry before attempting to brush or style it.
Excessive Use of Chemical Products
Although it is necessary to wash and condition your hair regularly, overuse of shampoos, conditioners and styling products can cause a chemical build-up in your hair. This results in the hair shafts being severely weakened, which can cause your hair to start falling out. Your stylist will be able to provide you with recommendations regarding any alternative products that can be used to keep your hair healthy.
