How to Clean Your Hair Beautification Tools
Whether you work in a salon or you use a variety of hair tools at home, keeping them clean is important not only to the health of your hair, but also to the life of your tools. Product buildup can prevent curling and straightening irons from doing what they should, and even failing to clean brushes and combs can lead to oily hair. Here are some tips for cleaning your hair beautification tools.
Your Blowdryer
You might just use your blowdryer then forget it, thinking that since it never actually touches your hair, it does not need cleaning. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Your blowdryer sucks air in from the rear, heats it, and pushes it out the front. This means that all kinds of dust and debris can cake up on the vents over time, causing it to stop producing enough air, and eventually burning up the electric motor inside. To clean it, simply remove the grill on the back and wipe it clean. If the grill is not removable, use the nozzle of a vacuum to remove the buildup.
Combs and Brushes
For your own personal combs and brushes, expensive chemical solutions are absolutely not necessary. Remove any strands each time you use your brush to prevent them from building up, and then soak your brushes and combs in a solution of hot water and clarifying shampoo overnight once every couple of weeks. This removes product buildup and leaves your brushes clean as a whistle. Allow them to air dry, or use your blowdryer on them to speed up the process.
Curling and Flat Irons
Curling and flat irons are incredibly prone to product buildup. They heat up the natural oils on your hair, which deposit onto the plates or barrels and solidify as they dry. This buildup is even worse if you use heat protection products before you style. To remove it, just wipe them down with a microfiber cloth dipped in warm water. (Unplug them first, and make sure they are completely dry before using them again.) If the buildup is particularly difficult, turn the iron on its lowest setting, allow it to warm for a few minutes, and try again.
Rollers and Accessories
Velcro rollers, bobby pins, and hair barrettes are also prone to build up over time, but the good news is that you can remove it in much the same way you do your combs and brushes. To do it, just fill a container with a solution of hot water and clarifying shampoo, and give them a good soak. If this does not seem to do the trick, add up to ½ cup of vinegar, which helps to further break down oil and product while sanitizing your accessories at the same time.
Keeping your hair beautification tools clean is important for healthy hair and long-lived styling tools. Your tools can serve you well for years to come as long as you take care of them and keep them clean using the helpful tips listed above.
