How to Manage Thinning Hair
Is your hair seemingly thinner by the day? If so, there are several things that you can do to help to restore it to its original thickness. From special shampoos, to certain hairstyles, and even to surgery, there are many ways to manage thinning hair and get back your youthful look.
#1 – Get a Haircut
The longer your hair is, the more weighted it tends to become. As such, if you have fine or thin hair, longer hairstyles can actually make it appear even thinner. Consider cutting a few inches off of your hair – or even rocking that new short ‘do – and discover how much more volume it can offer.
#2 – Try a Clarifying Shampoo
Another great way to treat thinning hair involves utilizing a clarifying shampoo that helps to remove residual oils and product that can weigh your hair down. These shampoos gently remove excess oil and buildup, thereby lightening your hair and helping to restore its volume.
#3 – Use a Lightweight Conditioner
Most people condition their hair to keep it soft, but did you know that your conditioner may actually be depositing a film onto your hair to seal the cuticle? Try a special lightweight conditioner (they are usually labeled as “volumizing” to skip the buildup and add more height.
#4 – Use Your Blowdryer
If you want to give the illusion of more volume to treat thinning hair, make sure to utilize your blowdryer after each shampoo. To do it, towel-dry your hair, flip your head upside down, and blow dry it at the roots, against its natural growth direction. This will stimulate the hair shaft causing it to stand up taller at the root and give you more volume. With a good, flexible hairspray, you can make the boost last all day.
#5 – Minoxidil Shampoos
Minoxidil, the compound found in Rogaine, has been shown to help some men and women regrow their hair. Although scientists are not sure exactly how or why it works, they believe that minoxidil may actually dilate the blood vessels in the scalp, which allows more blood flow and nutrients to reach the scalp. Thus, the follicles reactivate and allow for hair regrowth.
#6 – Microneedling
Although the concept of microneedling to treat thinning hair is still being researched, it does show some promise. Essentially, a doctor utilizes a tool containing tiny needles to “injure” your scalp, which triggers your body’s natural healing processes. Over time, and with several treatments, this may actually stimulate your hair follicles to reactivate.
#7 – Hair Transplant Surgery
Hair transplant surgery is quite costly. In short, doctors transplant hair follicles from one part of your head to another, which in turn allows your own natural hair to regrow in those areas. Oftentimes, the follicles are taken from the thickest part of the hair, just above the ears, and other locations where their removal is not noticeable.
As you can see, there are several ways to manage thinning hair. Depending on the severity of your condition and the lengths you are willing to go to in order to regain your thick tresses, you can choose anything from a haircut to a surgical procedure.
