How to Pull Off the Messy Hair Look
Many women spend ample time every day preparing their hair for the day ahead. Products, styling, curling, straightening – it seems that it never ends. Sometimes, there are days when spending this time styling just seems to frustrating to endure. Fear not, because you can pull off a messy hair look with the tips and tricks below.
Rolling Out of Bed vs. Messy Style
The first rule of thumb for pulling off the messy hair look involves understanding the difference between rolling out of bed with a mess and creating that mess on your own. Even the messy hair look involves a little bit of work, but the good news is that it only takes a few minutes of your time. Gather up a few tools before you dig in. You will need:
- Bobby pins
- Hairspray
- Dry conditioner
- Matte pomade
Remove Frizz and Detangle
This is the main difference between true bedhead and the bedhead look. You will need to brush your hair thoroughly to remove any tangles and distribute the oils evenly from root to tip. Not only does it make your hair look cleaner, but it also makes it easier to style. The best way to do this is with a heat tool, and most women find that a big-barrel curling iron works best for the messy hair look. It takes only a few minutes to do, too. For the best results, curl each section of hair around a big barrel, then let it air-cool before touching it.
Get Tousled
The fun part comes once your hair has curled and cooled. At this point, if you want a beachy look, you should put a little pomade in your hands, rub them together, and get to tousling. Be careful here since you do not want to add tangles or promote frizz; the goal is to create a windblown-like effect that looks messy and chic all at the same time. Conversely, if you want the supermodel messy hair look with big, shiny hair, try a keratin-infused anti-frizz serum instead of the pomade. You will need to tousle a bit more, but the result is noticeable.
Don’t Forget the Bobby Pins
If you don’t have a supply of bobby pins, this is a purchase you need to make. Head over to your local department store and pick up a package of about 200. Put some in your purse or bag, and stash them next to your mirrors at home. A bobby pin here and there can create a ton of different looks, especially if you want to frame your face or pin back the bangs you desperately want to grow out. If you have fine hair, a strategically placed pin or two can add significant volume, too.
Finally, if you absolutely do not want to fool with your hair at all, simply brush it out, add a little anti-frizz and shine serum, and throw it up into a messy bun. Pull out a few tendrils here and there, pump up the volume, and tuck in the loose ends with a few bobby pins.
